Coffee, Tea, and Holy Water | Book Review Posted: 29 Apr 2015 10:10 PM PDT
The inspiration for the author’s journey was her experience in the local coffee shop: diverse people with diverse drink orders. Amanda was not just sitting in the shop warming up with her coffee; she was OBSERVING the culture and environment as a barista behind the counter. She wondered about the environment outside her community and familiar places. Keeping in mind it’s a travel journal and not a Biblical textbook or home Bible study, this book is thought-provoking. Neither is this a book on evangelism. Scripture and methods are lacking in the text. However, the travel experiences are memorable, especially how the author perceives Christianity around the globe. She writes about the people she encounters and the physical environments as well. It’s a travel book with theological discussions and observations. Heart Sisters Be the Friend You Want to Have | Book Review Posted: 29 Apr 2015 09:15 PM PDT
As I read through the book I found myself highlighting key concepts. This is a book I would read more than once because it’s filled with helpful suggestions. I’m raising two teenage daughters and will enjoy discussing how they can become Heart Sisters too! You’ll learn how to apologize, accept forgiveness, set limits, resolve conflicts, learn humility, and more. By examining past friendships and applying these methods for present and future friendships you’ll recognize the value of having heart sisters in your life. One of my favorite features in the book is the “Heart Potential” diagram based on the friendships of Jesus. It’s a visual reminder that Jesus had an outer circle of friends, inner circle and really close friends. The image strips away the middle-school belief of feeling left out or rejected when you’re not inside that “inner circle.” Read the book and see why some circles are NOT worth joining! Learn to identify healthy friendships and those friends that need to be cut away. Inspired by Scripture, the #HeartSisters concept is woven through Bible stories of friendships and conflicts. The book is well-researched and could easily be used for a small group Bible study or Book Club. You’ll find five discussion questions at the end of each chapter.
